One of the first signs of an impacted wisdom tooth is persistent pain in the back of your mouth. The pressure from the tooth pushing against others can lead to discomfort, jaw stiffness, and even headaches. The pain often worsens over time if the tooth continues to shift or becomes infected.

2. Infections and Gum Inflammation

Partially erupted wisdom teeth create an opening for bacteria to enter the gum tissue. This can result in painful infections such as pericoronitis—an inflammation of the gum around the impacted tooth. Symptoms may include swelling, redness, difficulty chewing, and a foul taste in the mouth.

3. Tooth Crowding and Alignment Issues

Impacted wisdom teeth can push against neighboring teeth, leading to crowding and misalignment. This is especially problematic for patients who have had orthodontic work done, as it may undo the effects of braces or aligners. The pressure can also damage adjacent molars, increasing the need for restorative dental work.

4. Cysts and Jaw Damage

When a wisdom tooth remains impacted in the jawbone, a fluid-filled sac called a cyst can develop around it. Over time, this cyst may expand, causing damage to the jawbone, nerves, and surrounding structures. In severe cases, it can even lead to the development of benign tumors.

5. Difficulty Maintaining Oral Hygiene

Impacted or partially erupted wisdom teeth are difficult to reach with a toothbrush or floss. This creates an environment where plaque and food particles accumulate, increasing the risk of cavities, gum disease, and bad breath.
